Gary Heinrich, 17-year-old Hayward (Calif.) H.S. senior, hardly treated his elders with respect in senior AAU swim championships at Philadelphia, upsetting favored Bill Yorzyk by 10 meters in 400-meter individual medley in 5:15.6 for new U.S. record.

Captain Kenneth D. Chandler, 33, sandy-haired Korean war jet ace, buzzed his Convair F-102 delta-wing interceptor 620 miles from Chicago's O'Hare Field to Maryland's Andrews AFB at record 679 mph to win Bendix Trophy race (see page 18).

Margaret Osborne du Pont, three-time U.S. singles champion and doubles' winner 12 times, will captain Wightman. Cup team which meets Britain at Sewickley, Pa. Aug. 10-11. Others: Althea Gibson, Darlene Hard, Louise Brough, Dorothy Head Knode.

Danny Murtaugh, lantern-jawed former infielder who has had plenty of experience with floundering Pittsburgh, both as player and coach, was given dubious honor of succeeding fired Bobby Bragan as "interim" manager of Pirates (see page 19).
