Carnival on the Boards

The bright and colorful panoply of the indoor track season sparkles in this picture of Madison square Garden, its banked balcoines full of enthusiasts and the infield populated with athletes in their many-hued uniforms and the penguinlike officials in the cold grandeur of black and white. The indoor track spectacle borrows some of its own special excitement from the circus but most of its springs form the intimate drama of man pitted against man in a struggle before the roaring multitudes who have filled areanas as long as there were arenas for them to fill.
