Truth and Beauty

July 09, 1961

One thing weight lifters and body builders have in common is muscles. But where the weight boys like to use their muscles, the body boys mostly just like to exhibit theirs. Last week these two schools of thought met at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, Calif. for a combined weight-lifting and body-beautiful contest. Jim Bradford (left) won the heavyweight lift with presses of 350, 370 and 380 pounds. This proved, if nothing else, that even a non-Adonis like Jim could, if need be, pick up a demigod like Hugo Labra (above), a paragon from Muscle Beach who won the title Most Muscular Man, and toss him out on his beautiful ear.
