And into the Trees

Only they're not trees but concrete pilings underneath an ocean pier off Huntington Beach, Calif., where the annual West Coast surfing championships were held recently. Shooting the pier was an optional freestyle event that called for stylish defiance of death in the best Ernest Hemingway tradition.
