Jane Ellen Needham, 14, who rides Morgan show horses on her parents' farm in Holden, Mass., became the owner of a 2-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse when her nomination, Royal Omen, won the Kentucky Club pipe-tobacco horse-naming contest.

Jim Lewis, 20, of Uniondale, N.Y., a 5-foot-9 160-pound third classman (sophomore) on the U.S. Naval Academy's lacrosse team, scored three goals and had four assists in a 15-3 victory over Johns Hopkins to extend unbeaten Navy's season record to 7-0.

Ralph Childs, 16, a high school sophomore and the son of a postal clerk in Detroit, outlasted Donald Sakai of Waterbury, Conn. 21-17, 29-27, 21-11 in the finals to take the junior men's title in the U.S. Table Tennis Championships at Inglewood, Calif.

Ann Stranahan of Toledo, a golfer for 8½ years who has been tutored by her husband Frank between his own tours around the golf course, defeated Mary Lou Butler of Albuquerque 7 and 6 for the Women's Southwestern Amateur Championship in Phoenix.

Susan Blaisdell, 14, a Middletown, N.J. equestrienne who led the U.S. Pony Team to the international championship last year on 5-year-old Highfield's Tulip, gained four blue ribbons to win the large pony title at the Junior Essex Troop Show in West Orange, N.J.

Russell Herman, a Spokane masonry contractor, set an Idaho state record when he caught a 54-pound 5-ounce mackinaw trout in the Priest Lake Fishing Derby. It took him 45 minutes to haul in the 43-inch fish, one of the largest lake trout ever landed in the U.S.
