Ben Gum, PARKERSBURG, W.VA.
Football
Ben, a senior fullback and linebacker at Parkersburg South High,
rushed for 232 yards to lead the Patriots to a 26-20 victory over
Martinsburg and their first state title. He also won the Sam Huff
Award as the top defensive player in West Virginia.

Elyse Lee, ALBION, MICH.
Diving
Elyse, a senior at Albion High, scored 489.55 points to win her
fourth state Division 2 one-meter diving title while setting a
state record for all classes. She was undefeated throughout her
high school career--70 meets--and will dive for Michigan next
year.

Rob Pascale, SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE
Ice Hockey
Pascale, a senior forward at Stonehill College, set school career
records for goals (76), assists (76) and points (152). This
season he has 16 goals, 11 assists and 27 points, and he has
already been named ECAC Northeast Player of the Week three times.

Cetera DeGraffenreid, SYLVA, N.C.
Basketball
Cetera, a freshman point guard at Smoky Mountain High, scored a
school-record 45 points and had eight assists and eight steals in
her first game as a Lady Mustang. As an eighth-grader at
Cullowhee Valley last year, she had a school-record 60-point
game.

Mark Vaillancourt, MANCHESTER, N.H.
Skeet Shooting
Vaillancourt, 38, a carpenter, won the World Skeet Championships
in San Antonio after hitting all 250 clay targets in his 12-gauge
shotgun event and winning a shoot-off. He has missed only three
of 2,350 targets this year.

Shoko Mikami, TOKYO
Soccer
Mikami, a freshman forward at Christian Brothers University,
topped the NCAA Division II in goals (33), goals per game (1.65)
and points per game (3.80) as she led the Lady Bucs to the Gulf
South Conference title. She was GSC Player and Rookie of the
Year.

Frank Herrelko, BOWIE, MD.
Senior Games
Herrelko, 90, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and World War II
vet, won nine age-group gold medals (five in track and field,
four in bowling) at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St.
George, Utah. He earned a 10th gold as overall track and field
champion.
