BOBSLED

Time was when bobsledding was dominated by East and West Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. This year, as the recent European championships showed, the sport shakes down to two: Switzerland and East Germany. Look for record times on the remodeled old Lake Placid run, now, at 1,557 meters, the world's longest refrigerated course and definitely the most dangerous. A U.S. two-man team currently holds the speed record (1:03.18), but it will melt away under the red-hot Swiss sleds.
