Kassanchuk, 43, a house-husband, won the Great American Triathlon in Golden Valley, Minn. with a time of 4:56:05. He ran 15 km. in 1:03:28, canoed 10 km. in 1:11:52 and bicycled 75 km. in 2:40:45 to defeat 46 other competitors.

Takyi, a ninth-grader, scored 18 goals and had seven assists to lead the soccer team at German-town (Pa.) Friends School to an 11-0 record. In his three years of play, the center-striker scored 49 goals as Germantown won 26 of 27 games.

Linda and Lori won girls' state high-school cross-country titles as freshmen. Linda, who attends Pueblo Central, defeated 170 other runners in the Colorado Class-AAA meet, covering a three-mile course in Pueblo in 18:07.6 to become her state's first freshman champion. Lori led Union High to its fifth consecutive team title by winning the Oklahoma Class-AAA race over 87 other competitors in Tulsa. She completed the two-mile course with a time of 12:34.6.

Anthony, a 6-foot, 190-pound junior with 9.8 speed, ran for 2,210 yards and 19 TDs on 256 carries, with a single-game high of 312 yards, to pace Newton High to a 7-2-1 record. As a sophomore he gained 1,250 yards in seven games.

NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO
Singleton, 24, a salesman and the world's second-rated sprint bicyclist, set outdoor world records for the standing-start 1,000 meters (1:03.82) and the flying 200 (10.58 seconds) and 500 (27.31) in a 24-hour span at time trials in Mexico City.
