Lamar, an unbeaten senior sprinter at Bennett High School, won both dashes at the New York State high school track and field championships in Ithaca. He set a meet record in the 100-meter (10.71) and tied the 200 mark (21.1).

HELEN KNIGHT
ENCINO, CALIF.
Knight, 57, a six-handicap golfer, shot a 72-hole score of 324 to beat Elaine Goff and win the El Caballero Country Club women's title for the 25th year in a row. Since the club opened in 1957, she has been its only women's champ.

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND
Cowper, 40, became the first person to sail solo around the world in both directions. By completing the 30,000-mile east-to-west journey in 237 days, he beat by 38 days the world record set by Kenichi Horie of Japan.

JULIE QUAMME
KETTERING, OHIO
Quamme, a freshman tennis player at Sinclair Community College, had a 25-0 record and won the women's U.S. junior-college singles title. In 1977 she won the Ohio high school girls' singles title but then quit tennis for four years.

SCHERTZ, TEXAS
Calvarese, 62, ran his first marathon at age 53 in 1973 and since then has competed in an average of 10 a year. At Boston this year his time wasn't great (4:01), but it was his 100th marathon and he hasn't dropped out of any of them.

DANI DeNIGHT
NORTHGLENN, COLO.
Dani, a senior goalkeeper at Northglenn High, did not allow a goal this season as she led the Lady Norse soccer team to an 18-0 record and the girls' state high school championship. In her three seasons, Northglenn had a 51-1 record.
