Bridgett, 14, won three events and established two meet records at the YMCA Swimming Nationals: the 1,650 free (16:32.86) and 200 back (2:03.99). She won the 500 free in 4:48.44, the second-fastest clocking ever at the Y nationals.

Calvin, a 112-pound junior wrestler for Belton-Honea Path High, won his second consecutive state Class AAA title by beating Anthony Wideman of Westside Anderson High in the championship bout. His two-year record is 56-1.

John, 10, used a 20-pound-test line to land sailfish of 40½, 76 and 39 pounds and win the junior angler title at the 38th Fort Lauderdale Semi-Annual Billfish Tournament. He has been fishing since he was three years old.

Mike, 22, a DH and first baseman for Michigan State, hit .357 for 145 total bases as he set Spartan single-season home run (20) and RBI (66) records. Last year the 6'2", 195-pound righthander had only three homers and batted. 164.

Penotte, 77, and Treistman, 29, both bowled over their opponents. Penotte, a grandmother of five who has been bowling for 39 years, rolled games of 159, 114 and 117 to win her third straight bowling gold medal in the 75-and-over division of the Senior Games at the University of Texas-Arlington. Treistman, a truck driver, had an 855 series with games of 290, 277 and 288 and rolled 20 consecutive strikes as he led Van Wick Liquors to the Starlight Majors league title.
