Ruth, a 17-year-old senior at Fairfield's Roger Ludlowe High, won the state Class L girls cross-country championship, covering the 4,000-meter course in 13:28.8. She broke the one-year-old meet record set by Kathy Olsen of Waterford High.

CLARE DRAKE
EDMONTON, ALBERTA

RIMS ROOF
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA

PETE BARANEK
CRIVITZ, WIS.

Roof, a Coe College senior placekicker, ended his career with an NCAA Division III-record 102 extra points in a row. That obliterated the old mark of 74 and is the third-longest streak in football history. Baranek, a senior running back at Carthage College, rushed for 382 yards on 24 carries in a 33-28 win over North Central College to break the Division III single-game rushing record and tie the all-division NCAA mark set by Kelly Ellis of Northern Iowa in 1979.
