HAVEN OF HAVENS

June 29, 1986

The Statue of Liberty, whose 100th birthday the nation will be celebrating next week, stands both as the symbol of the aspiring immigrant's American quest and, not coincidentally, as the very centerpiece of the magnificent harbor through which millions of newcomers passed. In these pages SI honors Miss Liberty with a profile of New York Harbor, a reflection on the brilliant array of coaches and athletes who have immigrated to these shores, a photo gallery of five such immigrants and, finally, the story of how an unusual odyssey to the United States reunited a ballplaying son and his father.
