December 28, 1987

The nation's No. 1 team, Miami, swaggered into its Fiesta Bowl showdown with No. 2 Penn State on Jan. 2 and came away a 14-10 loser.

The Nittany Lions completed a 12-0 season and won the mythical national title by intercepting five of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Vinny Testaverde's passes, the final one on their own goal line with nine seconds left. At Super Bowl XXI in Pasadena, the Giants beat the Broncos 39-20 to end a 28-year title drought.

Quarterback Phil Simms completed 22 of 25 passes and led New York to four second-half touchdowns.
