Liz, a senior-to-be at St. Joseph High, won the boys' singles title at the Class M state tennis tournament with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Hector Scarano of E.O. Smith High in Storrs. She had won the two previous state girls' crowns.

GAYLE MATTINGLY
CAREFREE, ARIZ.
Mattingly, 72, used a five-wood to ace the 160-yard par-3 17th hole at the Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree. Three days later, on the same course, he got another hole in one on the 145-yard par-3 3rd hole, using a four-iron.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF.
Carpenter, a sophomore-to-be at Fresno State, threw a school-record 21 shutouts and was a first-team All-America in softball. She had a 31-6 record with a 0.53 earned run average. The Bulldogs lost the NCAA title game 1-0 to UCLA.

JUSTIN McCARTER
PARKERSBURG, W.VA.
Justin, 12, won the 18-and-under division at the state racquetball championships, beating Johnny Layne of Nitro 4-11, 0-11, 11-9, 11-10, 11-7. It was his third state title. Justin is also the state 12-and-under junior golf champ.

DIANA PITTS
NEWARK, DEL.
Diana, 17, who will be a senior at Christiana High, won three individual state championships in track and field: the 400 meters in 55.3, the 200 in 24.5 and the triple jump with 36'7". She won both races for the second year in a row.

NEIL FITZPATRICK
TARRYTOWN, N.Y.
Fitzpatrick, 41, coached the Ardsley High baseball team to its fourth straight Class C state title, defeating Northern Adirondack High 7-6 in the final. No other New York high school has won consecutive state baseball crowns.
