AUSTRIA'S TONI SAILER WAS THE HERO OF THE WINTER GAMES IN Cortina,
Italy, , winning all three of the men's Alpine events; Hayes Jenkins
and Tenley Albright won the individual gold medals in figure skating
for the U.S., while the Soviets beat the Americans 4-0 in hockey. Led
by Bill Russell, San Francisco won its second straight NCAA title,
beating Iowa 83-71. For the first of five times, Billy Martin --
whose New York Yankees would beat the Dodgers in the World Series
later in the year -- appeared on the cover of SI.
