the Montreal Canadiens won their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup,
beating the Rangers in five games. Alabama topped Penn State 14-7
in the Sugar Bowl to claim No. 1. Tempers flared: Yankee manager
Billy Martin was fired after being accused of punching a marshmallow
salesman in a Minnesota hotel; Indiana coach Bob Knight was jailed
for allegedly hitting a policeman in Puerto Rico. Yankee catcher
Thurman Munson was killed in a plane crash.
