just five games to defeat the St. Louis Hawks for the NBA
championship; the Yankees whupped the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in the
World Series; Floyd Patterson knocked out Ingemar Johansson in the
sixth round in a heavyweight title fight. Speaking of overwhelming
the opposition, Wayne Gretzky was born in Brantford, Ont.; Carl Lewis
in Birmingham, Ala. And Ty Cobb died at the age of 74.
