A ONE-YARD PLUNGE BY ALAN AMECHE IN OVERTIME ENDED what some pro
football fans later declared the ''greatest game ever played,'' as
the Colts beat the Giants 23-17 for the NFL title. In the NBA, St.
Louis's Bob Pettit scored 50 points to help the Hawks nip the Celtics
110-109 in the sixth and final game of the championship. Tim Tam won
the Kentucky Derby; SI's April 28 cover horse, Silky Sullivan,
finished 12th. And the America's Cup races were revived after 21
years. Columbia beat Sceptre 4-0 off Newport.
