The August advice on how to burglarproof your home did not mention
that the screws manufacturers routinely include with the striker
plates in deadbolt- lock packages are worthless if a burglar tries to
break through a door. Those screws are one inch or shorter. They
attach the plate only through the doorjamb, which is usually made out
of soft pine. The plate can be knocked out easily. Use screws that
are at least three inches long to attach the striker plate into the
frame of the house.
We learned this the hard way when our home was broken into.
