Clinton's out of the money...A bumpy ride for Schwinn...Gregory's skinny on Bowe

October 18, 1992

Finished
In fourth place, Bubba Clinton, a 2-year-old colt, in the first harness race of his career, at Garden State Park. Although Bubba was bothered that the leaders kicked dirt in his face, he came in ahead of four other pacers. "He's a little quirky," said his trainer, Greg Hoch. "He has habits he has to outgrow."

Filed
For Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the Schwinn Bicycle Co., of Chicago, the oldest manufacturer of bikes in the U.S. The 97-year-old privately owned firm has lost more than $50 million in 1992, and its share of the American market has plummeted from a high of 28% in the '60s to about 8%. Securities analyst David Leibowitz said, "The Schwinn name has tremendous cachet, but it's not a name known to children." Industry cognoscenti nevertheless expect Schwinn to survive.

Taken
Under the wing of comedian cum nutritionist Dick Gregory, 247-pound heavyweight contender Riddick Bowe, who wants to drop a quick 12 before his Nov. 13 title bout with the well-carved, 210-pound champ, Evander Holyfield, in Las Vegas. Gregory, who also worked with Muhammad Ali after Ali's losses to Ken Norton and Leon Spinks in the 1970s, has been feeding Bowe vitamin-and herb-laced fruit drinks and hopes to get him onto a daily diet of fruit salad for breakfast and lunch and fish or skinless chicken for dinner. Bowe, who has a 31-0 record, with 28 knockouts, is "the first boxer I ever got that wasn't a basket case," says Gregory.

Retired
To his mother's home in Binton, England, from the U.S., 1976 Olympic and world figure skating champion John Curry, 43, who is suffering from AIDS. Curry had lived in this country and worked as a professional skater and skating choreographer since '76.

Broken
Three records, by triathletes Mark Allen and Paula Newby-Fraser, in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. By completing the 2.4-mile swim, the 112-mile bike ride and the 26.2-mile run in 8:09:08, Allen, 34, not only shaved seven seconds off his three-year-old world mark but also won the Ironman men's competition for a record fourth consecutive time. Newby-Fraser, 30, successfully defended her women's division title by finishing in 8:55:31, more than five minutes better than the record she set in 1989. She has won the event five times.

Sentenced
By a Hamilton County, Ohio, common pleas court judge to 15-years-to-life in prison, Artise Anderson, 15, who was tried as an adult and convicted of murder in the death of Indianapolis Colt defensive end Shane Curry. Anderson shot Curry in the head on May 3 while Curry was sitting behind the wheel of his truck in the parking lot of a Cincinnati nightclub. During the trial Anderson said he fired at Curry when frightened during a dispute over a car that was blocking the nightclub's driveway, but prosecutors and a witness said Curry did nothing to provoke the shooting.
