Courcol, a senior at Mississippi State, and Collantes, a junior at Ole Miss, enter the winter season ranked No. 1 in men's and women's college tennis, respectively. Courcol, whose father is the publisher of the French sports magazine L'Equipe, is the only player ever to sweep the two fall legs of the men's college grand slam, the Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships and the Collegiate Championships. He won three tournaments and had a 14-0 record this fall. Collantes successfully defended her title at the All-American Championships, the second leg of the women's grand slam, with a 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Stanford's Laxmi Poruri. She also won the Northwestern and Louisiana State fall invitationals and was 12-0 this autumn.
Maurice, a senior wide receiver for Cummings High, set a national high school career-reception record of 257, breaking by five the mark set by Natividad Valdez of Mission (Texas) High in 1988. Through last Friday his 86 catches had led the Cavaliers to a 10-2 mark. He also holds the state record for receptions in a season, with 106.
Jenni, a freshman at Salem High, won the state Division I girls' cross-country championship with a girls' state-and course-record time of 17:15.3 over the 3.1-mile circuit. She beat defending champ Amy McKinley of Marion Steele High by 40 seconds, and as of last Friday she had the best 3.1-mile time by a girl in the country.

Khalfin, 63, a former Soviet national weightlifting champ, won the men's age 60-64 title in the 132.2-pound division at the world masters championships for the second time in three years. He snatched 132.2 pounds and clean-and-jerked a world-record 176.2. Khalfin's total score of 308.5 established his eighth world record for men age 60-64.
Rhoni, 16, won the girls' title at the junior world water ski championships by finishing first in tricks, second in jumping and eighth in slalom. She also swept all three events in winning the girls' overall crown at the Pan Am championships and, for the second consecutive year, the girls' age 13-16 title at the nationals.
