The Unfortunate 500

This season's Did Not Play list has comprised a staggering—but typical—number of NFL players who have missed at least one game because of injury
December 07, 1992

It started out like any other play, on a day like any other NFL game day. With a cold breeze blowing into his face at the Meadowlands, Kansas City Chief quarterback Dave Krieg dropped back to pass early in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the New York Jets. Two young, irrepressible defensive linemen bore down on him, Scott Mersereau from Krieg's left and Dennis Byrd from his right. Krieg took a quick step up into the pocket to avoid being sandwiched, and Byrd ran full-speed into the oncoming Mersereau—266 pounds of force meeting 275 pounds of resistance. The crown of Byrd's green helmet slammed into Mersereau's sternum. Both players fell to the earth.

Mersereau, the wind knocked out of him, struggled to his feet within a few moments. Byrd (photograph at left), having suffered a fracture of the fifth vertebra, didn't move.

"What's the matter?" said Jet defensive end Marvin Washington, as he leaned over Byrd, his best friend.

"I don't have any feeling in my legs," replied Byrd.

While Byrd, 26, lay on the field for seven minutes without moving, Washington and New York safety Erik McMillan started to cry. At one point, as Byrd looked up into the cold and gray New Jersey sky, he asked the doctors around him, "Am I going to be paralyzed?"

As of Monday night Byrd still had total paralysis of his lower extremities and partial paralysis of his upper body. There were signs of sensory preservation in his legs but no voluntary function. He had some movement in his biceps and triceps, but wrist and finger functions were absent. Spinal specialists at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City were planning surgery for midweek to determine the extent of the damage to his spine. The doctors were guardedly optimistic, saying they had seen patients with similar injuries walk again.

Byrd's trauma was the third reminder in four days of the perilous accidents that can occur on a football field. In Detroit on Thanksgiving Day former Lion guard Mike Utley made an emotional return to the Silverdome in a wheelchair a year and nine days after he had sustained a neck injury (he fell while blocking) that left him paralyzed from the chest down. And closer to home for the Jets, New York wide receiver Al Toon last Friday announced his retirement because he couldn't shake the cumulative effects of having suffered nine concussions in eight years (page 26).

All of which reaffirmed for every NFL player the fact that at any time, on any field, disaster can strike. "It could have been me lying there," said Krieg, who was still shaken two hours after Byrd had been injured.

When December rolls around, even the healthy players in the league are hurting. It's a fact of NFL life. But we tend to become so immune to the violence of the game, so jaded by each Sunday's allotment of broken bones, torn muscles and sprained joints, that it takes a crippling blow like the one suffered by Byrd or a brutal run of injuries to star players to bring us back to our senses.

In the past three weeks alltime greats New York Giant linebacker Lawrence Taylor (torn Achilles tendon) and Cincinnati Bengal tackle Anthony Munoz (torn knee ligament) probably had their careers ended by injury. Houston Oiler quarterback Warren Moon (page 28) may be sidelined for as many as six weeks with a broken arm, and the Phoenix Cardinals effectively lost their pass rush when linebackers Ken Harvey and Freddie Joe Nunn tore knee ligaments in the same game.

"I hate to say it," says Barry Sanders, the Detroit Lions' superb—and relatively durable—running back, "but one of the first things you notice in this league is how steadily people step in and out of the lineup because of injuries. After a while you hardly notice it anymore. You just go on."

"In this business you get a bit numb to all the injuries," says assistant trainer Billy Brooks of the Atlanta Falcons. "Hey, three weeks into the season, these guys are all beat up. You just shake your head and do the best you can for them."

"You wouldn't be numb to it if you got the tearful phone calls I get on Sunday nights and Monday mornings throughout the fall," says player agent Leigh Steinberg. "It's become a major part of my job. I should have gone to medical school. I talk to players, wives, trainers and doctors, trying to help my players make decisions affecting the rest of their career."

Although it may seem otherwise, injuries are not on the upswing this season. "I've been studying injuries in the NFL for 13 years," says University of Iowa trainer Dr. John Powell, who puts together data sent by NFL trainers, "and as far as I can see, there's not much of a difference this year. The game is one of collision, and people get hurt." According to the NFL, 219 players were on injured reserve after 11 weeks of the 1991 season; 11 weeks into this season, the number was 213.

However, as the accompanying—and dizzying—list shows, 482 players have been hurt seriously enough to miss at least one game because of an injury this year. That's a staggering 17 players per team. Through Sunday these players had missed a total of 2,798 games, and figuring the average NFL salary to be $480,000, that's something in the neighborhood of $83,940,000 down the drain.

"I'd bet you that every team in the NFL has 10 players hurt enough that they could be put on injured reserve on any given week," says Washington Redskin general manager Charley Casserly, whose club certainly qualifies. While injuries have crippled the Washington defense at linebacker and in the secondary, a devastated offensive line is the biggest reason that the Skins have struggled to a 7-5 record this season. Injuries have forced Redskin coach Joe Gibbs to use three players at left tackle, three at left guard, three at center and three at right tackle. Only right guard Mark Schlereth has held his ground.

That Washington is still in playoff contention is stunning, considering its two starting cornerbacks (Darrell Green and Martin Mayhew) went down with broken forearms, Pro Bowl center Jeff Bostic has missed seven weeks with a torn rotator cuff, Pro Bowl left tackle Jim Lachey missed six weeks recovering from a torn knee ligament, guard Joe Jacoby sat out two games with a neck injury, and so on and so forth.

The Redskins have been so devastated along the offensive line that center Matt Elliott, who was the last player picked in the April draft, got his first start before Heisman Trophy winner and teammate Desmond Howard, the fourth player picked in the draft. "Who'da thunk it, me playing before Desmond?" says Elliott. "Me, a flippin' rookie. I'm in awe, starting for the world-champion Redskins."

For sure, luck with injuries has contributed to the success of the league's front-runners. Neither the Buffalo Bills nor the Miami Dolphins, who played for the AFC's best record three weeks ago, have had a season-ending injury to a key player. The same goes for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers, who at 10-2 are tied for the best record in the NFC.

On the other hand, fate has not been kind to other teams. Take the Lions, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season but are now 3-9. They have lost every starting offensive lineman except one to injury or death in the last 12 months, and four wideouts have missed a total of 16 games with various ailments. "I've coached in high school, college and the pros," says Lion coach Wayne Fontes, "and I've never seen a one-year stretch like this in my life."

The Falcons, a playoff team in 1991 but 5-7 this year, have lost quarterback Chris Miller for the season to reconstructive knee surgery and five defensive backs for at least one game apiece. Says cornerback Tim McKyer, "I have to shake hands and introduce myself to the safeties every week, because I'm never sure who I'm lining up next to."

Even one of the worst teams in the league, the 2-10 Seattle Seahawks, can lay some of the blame for their failures on injuries. They lost their top wideout, Brian Blades (broken clavicle), on his first play of the season, and wideout Lewis Clark (broken rib) and left guard John Hunter (torn knee ligament) both went down three weeks ago against the Los Angeles Raiders. The two quarterbacks who fought for the starting job in training camp, Kelly Stouffer (separated shoulder) and Dan McGwire (broken hip, out for the season), have missed 10 games between them. "It's maddening," says Seattle coach Tom Flores. "A nightmare. An absolute nightmare."

Woe is everyone, everywhere. Quarterback Hugh Millen of the New England Patriots had such a grotesquely dislocated shoulder that as he walked out of the shower one day last month, revolted teammates yelled at him to cover the injury. The Indianapolis Colts' millionaires on defense—end Steve Emtman and linebacker Quentin Coryatt, the first two players chosen in the '92 draft, and veteran linebacker Duane Bickett—all got hurt in games against the Dolphins. Emtman, who is out for the year after undergoing knee surgery, and Bickett, who missed four games with a pulled hamstring, were hurt on the same play on Nov. 8. Coryatt, who suffered a displaced bone in his wrist on Oct. 25, is probably finished for the season too.

Cornerback Albert Lewis and tight end Mike Dyal of the Kansas City Chiefs broke their left forearms in the same game against the San Diego Chargers. Linebacker Kurt Gouveia and safety Danny Copeland, both of the Redskins, slammed into each other on a play against the New York Giants—and both got up with sprained necks.

As for the quarterbacks: Got an hour? They've been KO'd in the pocket (Jeff Hostetler and Phil Simms of the Giants, and Timm Rosenbach of the Cardinals), scrambling out of the pocket (Miller and John Elway of the Denver Broncos) and diving for a first down (Moon). There are all kinds of dime-store theories about what should be done to protect quarterbacks, but changing the rules again isn't the answer. If quarterbacks are to be better protected, three things must be done: Officials must become more vigilant about calling late hits, more quarterbacks must slide or duck out of bounds instead of diving for the extra yard, and, most important, teams must practice "max-protect." That's coachspeak for keeping in enough blockers to protect the quarterback.

The Oilers might spare Moon another concussion by adding an H-back and subtracting a wide receiver or by keeping running back Lorenzo White at Moon's side on every pass play. Teams can protect their quarterbacks if they want to, but the newfangled offenses, with four and five wide receivers, make it appear as though coaches don't want to.

On the play in which Moon broke his arm, he was trying to convert a third down in the closing minutes of a crucial game for Houston. He dived for the first down, hitting the artificial turf at the same time that Viking Vencie Glenn's helmet rocketed into Moon's left shoulder and upper arm. "Warren sacrificed his life for the team," says Oiler receiver Haywood Jeffires.

A poignant thought, and there are a lot of similar ones in the Jets' locker room these days. "People say, 'You football players get paid too much money,' " said New York rookie defensive tackle Mario Johnson on Sunday evening. "But it's not too much if you lose your legs, your arms, your touch. There's no sport like this."

TWO PHOTOSTHE ALLENSAfter being sacked by the Buccaneers' Santana Dotson, Rosenbach was carried off the field. But he escaped with a bruised back.

All-Banged Up

How the mighty have fallen. Here's an All-Injury team for this season that, were its members healthy at the same time, would rival any Pro Bowl starting lineup. And there's even a coach to take charge—Dick MacPherson of the New England Patriots, who may be out for the season after having had colon surgery on Nov. 13. All these players have missed at least one game because of injury and have been selected for at least one Pro Bowl during their careers.
