Travis, a 5'11" senior guard on the Ephrata High boys' basketball team, and Kate, a 6'1" senior guard for the Lakes High girls' squad, each set a state career scoring record. Travis, whose best performance came during a 124-68 defeat of Lake Roosevelt High in which he scored 39 points and had 14 assists, ended his career with 2,292 points, including 419 three-point field goals. He led the Tigers to the Class A championship. Kate, who scored 2,753 points as a four-year starter for the Lancers, was named most valuable player of the girls' Class AAA tournament despite her school's fifth-place finish. As a senior she averaged 29.3 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots per game.

Kobata, a freshman pitcher on the Notre Dame softball team, hurled perfect games on consecutive days against Bowling Green and Loyola of Chicago. For the season she threw three perfectos, two other no-hitters and 12 shutouts while racking up an 18-3 record and a 0.46 ERA—seventh best in the nation—for the Fighting Irish.

Jefferson, a junior on the University of Houston track and field team, ran a 10.14 in the 100 meters and a 20.32 in the 200 to win both races at the Southwest Conference championships. A two-time champ in the 100 at the Penn Relays, he also ran a 10.13 at an invitational meet in April, which at the time was the fastest 100 in '93.
Lisa, a senior swimmer for Guilford High, set a girls' state record in the 100-yard butterfly (54.99) en route to winning her fourth consecutive Class AA state title in that event. A four-time All-America in the fly, she also won the 200 freestyle (1:50.87) at the state meet and was named female swimmer of the year in Illinois.

Van Nostrand, 59, beat Juan Couder of Spain 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the men's 55-and-over finals at the World Seniors Tennis Championship. The top-ranked U.S. 55-and-over player and a six-time national indoor singles champ, he also led the U.S. to a 3-0 defeat of Australia in the final round of the Austria Cup, the senior equivalent of the Davis Cup.
