MIDDLETOWN, IND.
Mike, a third baseman and recent graduate of Shenandoah High, set a national high school record by hitting three home runs in one inning. He led off a game against Union High with a solo blast and then hit a pair of three-run homers during Shenandoah's 18-run first inning. The old mark of two homers was shared by 34 players.

Michelle Gould
BOISE, IDAHO
Gould, 22, won her fifth consecutive women's national racquetball singles title by defeating Malia Bailey of Norfolk, Va., 15-6, 15-9. A former five-time girls' junior national champion as well, she is the current world titlist, having beaten Heather Stupp of Canada 15-8, 15-8 for that crown last August.

Joseph Cuozzo
OAKDALE, N.Y.
Cuozzo, 55, Ward Melville High's lacrosse coach, guided the Patriots to an 18th consecutive league title and an 18-0 record before losing to Sachem 8-4 in the county championship. His 25-year record is 469-45, including a 71-game winning streak from 1988 to '90. Cuozzo's teams have won four state titles, in 1978, '88, '89 and '92.

Jacque Vaughn
PASADENA
Jacque, a senior basketball point guard for John Muir High, had 23 points, 15 assists and 11 steals in a 70-63 upset of eventual Division II state champ Artesia High. The male recipient of the Dial Award, given to the top U.S. high school boy and girl scholar-athletes, he set the state single-season assist mark (513) and had a 3.94 academic average.

Janelle Parks
KETTERING, OHIO
Parks, 30, a recent graduate of the University of New Mexico, won the women's omnium title at the National Collegiate Road Cycling Championships. The second-oldest entrant in the field of 102 women, she finished first in both events: the 55-mile road race and the 43-lap, 30-mile criterium.

Christie Allen
ALTAMONT, KANS.
Allen, a senior at Pittsburg (Kans.) State, set a Division II women's record by winning her seventh and eighth titles at the division's track and field championships. She repeated as champion in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. A two-time Division II cross-country champ, she has also won indoor titles at 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
