Mariano, 18, and Nicole, 17, each won three titles at the junior national cycling championships: Mariano in individual pursuit, team pursuit and team time trial; Nicole in match sprint, points race and criterium. Mariano, who won three national junior titles in Argentina, where he lived from 1978 to '90, also won the team pursuit in the senior elite division at this year's nationals. He was second in the individual road race at the '93 junior worlds, in Perth, Australia. At last year's junior nationals Nicole won the omnium, individual road race and criterium and was third in the individual time trial. She received the 1992 Mary Cappy Trophy, which is given annually to the outstanding junior girls' cyclist at the national championships.

Matt Berger
COVINGTON, KY.
Berger, 19, a catcher, had two hits and batted in a run in the deciding game, an 8-2 victory over the Dallas Mustangs, to lead Cincinnati's Midland Redskins to the Connie Mack World Series championship. Berger was named MVP of the tournament, in which he batted .714 (15 for 21) in six games and had 12 RBIs.

Matthew Gendron
RAYMOND, MAINE
Matthew, 17, won his second consecutive boys' slalom crown at the national barefoot water-ski championships in West Palm Beach, Fla. He also won the tricks competition and the overall boys' title. Matthew placed 17th in the men's jumping competition with a leap (55'6") that would have earned him first place in the boys' division.

Danielle Scott
BATON ROUGE
Scott, a senior middle blocker and two-time All-America on the Long Beach State volleyball team, had a career-high 32 kills in 50 attempts in a four-game victory over Colorado. She leads the 49ers, who were 13-1 through last Friday and ranked No. 2 in the country, in kills (264), attempts (434), attack percentage (.482) and blocks (66).

Paul Banales
PHOENIX
Banales, 60, a computer analyst, defeated Don Alt of Dublin, Ohio, 15-9, 15-10 to win the world 60-and-over racquetball championship in Albuquerque. Last year he won the same title in the 55-and-over division. At the 1993 U.S. championships he won the 60-and-over crown and was a finalist in the 55's.
