DeBoom, 22, an exercise physiology student at Iowa, won the triathlon amateur national championships, and Curi, 26, placed first among the women. DeBoom completed the 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run in 1:49:03, which was 1:34 faster than the second-place finisher, his older brother Tony. DeBoom has been the top amateur in four races he has entered this year, only his second full season as a triathlete. Curi, a student at Harvard Law School, covered the nationals course in 2:05:06 to beat second-place finisher and defending women's champ Maryellen Powers by 13 seconds. Earlier this year Curi was the No. 1 female amateur at the Dogwood Dash Duathlon, the Danskin Triathlon and the Greater Hartford Triathlon.
Stacey, 16, won seven swimming gold medals and set three AAU national age-group records at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Her records came in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400 individual medley and as a member of the 400 medley relay team. Her other golds were in the 200 butterfly, 200 IM, 400 free and as part of the 400 free relay.

Curtis, a senior running back, has rushed for 1,469 yards on 126 carries in six games this season for Mississinawa Valley High. In a 56-13 win over Arcanum High, he ran 17 times for 440 yards and seven TDs. Curtis, who is Mississinawa's alltime leading ground gainer, with 5,068 yards, is also the school's career scoring leader in basketball.

Michael, a 35-year-old mother of three, was the only female to complete the Trans America Footrace, in which six of 13 runners finished. Michael, who took third place, completed the 2,912-mile race from Huntington Beach, Calif., to New York City in 586 hours, 15 minutes and seven seconds over 64 days.
Hartupee, 35, a physical education teacher, pinned Ron Moncur of Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1:27 to win the gold medal in the 125½-pound class in the 35-39 age division at the world masters freestyle wrestling championships. He was a three-time Michigan high school state titlist and a 1981 NCAA runner-up for Central Michigan.
