Nicole, 16, won the gold medal in women's èpèe at the U.S. Olympic Festival with a 5-4, 5-0 upset of top-seeded Laura Maskell, 36, of Portland. Earlier in the year she finished first in èpèe at the under-20 North American Cup and second at the Division I national championships.

Katrina Mumaw
LANCASTER, CALIF.
Katrina, 11, became the youngest person to break the sound barrier when she hit Mach 1.3 outside Moscow while piloting a MIG-29. A sports combat flier since the age of eight, she also holds the record, regardless of age, for number of victories in mock dogfights, at 111.

Alison Cross
OTTAWA
Alison, a seventh-grader at Terry Fox Elementary, was named the top girl athlete at the Carleton Board eighth-grade-and-under track and field championships when she finished first in the high jump and the 200 meters and second in the 100. She is also the Eastern Region Junior 2 gymnastics champ.

Courtney Burton
BENTON HARBOR, MICH.
Courtney, 16, won the 147-pound weight class at the National Junior Olympics when he defeated Dwayne Williams, 14, of Los Angeles, by unanimous decision. Courtney was also the National Junior Olympic 139-pound champ in 1993 and has a record of 52-5 over his three years of competition.

Chelsey Sakizzie
FARMINGTON, N.MEX.
Sakizzie, who recently graduated from Farmington High, led the Scorpions' softball team to a 24-0 record and its first class 4A state title. On the mound she had 17 wins, a 0.00 ERA and five perfect games, and struck out 210 batters in 103 innings. At the plate she hit .532, drove in 25 runs and scored 36.

Alberti Vasquez
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS
Vasquez, a 25-year-old freshman at Midwestern State, won the collegiate road racing championship to earn the Indians their first national title in any sport. Vasquez, who was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, is a former member of the Puerto Rican national bicycling team.
