Byng-ers and Bangers

April 19, 1998

Unlike the NHL, the NBA doesn't hand out an award for
"sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct." If it did, the 1997-98
winner of basketball's Lady Byng would be Cleveland guard Wesley
Person. While averaging a respectable 1.6 steals, at week's end
he had committed the fewest fouls per 48 minutes of anyone who
had played more than 500 minutes. Person's antithesis--the Sir
Hack recipient?--is Golden State center Felton Spencer. Here's a
look at their closest competitors.
