PGA Tour
One Straw Hat and Eight Silver Cups

Sam Snead's Tour record for victories in the same tournament
(eight, at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic) may never be
topped. Among active players only Mark O'Meara, with five wins
at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, is close to Snead's mark. This
week Greensboro organizers will unveil the Sam Snead Cup, a
trophy that will henceforth go to the tournament's champ each
year. Eponymous cups are running over for Sam, who was to be
given eight Snead trophies--he won only cash for his Greensboro
victories--during a ceremony on Tuesday. Forest Oaks Country
Club (right) features the thickest rough that Tour players have
encountered this season, which will make the Classic a good
gauge of O'Meara, Phil Mickelson and John Daly's chances at
another event that offers a silver cup to the winner: the U.S.
Open.

LPGA
Playing Chicken for Plenty of Lettuce

The 1997 Chick-fil-A was soggy. Foul weather made the fowl
classic the only LPGA tournament of the year to be shortened to
36 holes, yet the results left organizers clucking about their
good fortune. Nancy Lopez played extra crisply, shooting 71-66
and snapping her four-year, 68-tournament winless streak. While
hoping for more pleasant weather this week, the event's hosts
are making sure fans don't go hungry: Anyone who visits the
tournament Web site at www.lpgachick-fil-a.com can print out a
coupon for a free chicken sandwich. Lopez, Helen Alfredsson,
Laura Davies and Karrie Webb can only hope their birds will come
so easily.

That's No Mirage, It's A Mountain of Money

The Las Vegas Senior Classic's purse is up 40% from last year's,
the venue has doubled from one course (the TPC at the Canyons)
to two (add the TPC at Summerlin), and the tournament has
expanded from 54 to 72 holes. Other than that, Las Vegas is as
modest a blip on the Senior circuit as ever. Hale Irwin, Gil
Morgan and two-time winner Jim Colbert hope to leave town flush
with their shares of the Classic's $1.4 million pot.
