RAIN'S THE BANE OF BEAR'S LAIR

The rain-plagued third round of the 1997 Memorial took three
days. After the most sluggish 18 holes on Tour in a dozen years,
weather-beaten host Jack Nicklaus presented the trophy to Vijay
Singh at the end of 54 holes. History at Jack's track, the
Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin--the
Seattle of Ohio--is awash in such watershed moments. In its 22
years the Memorial has been marred by moisture 13 times. Even
sunny skies don't guarantee fast play. The '78 Memorial was won
by Jim (the Human Rain Delay) Simons, the slowest turtle on
Tour. If the weather follows form this week, David Duval, Ernie
Els and Tiger Woods will have to catch Singh in the rain.

NEW DEAL AT LOCUST HAS TOUR STARS ABUZZ

Helen Alfredsson, Laura Davies and Se Ri Pak swarm Locust Hill
Country Club this week, hoping to pester defending champ Penny
Hammel into relinquishing her crown. Dottie Pepper, Rochester's
1996 champ, was hopping mad last year after blowing a two-foot
putt on the final hole to hand the hardware to Hammel. This
year's tournament has a new sponsor, the Wegmans supermarket
chain; a new TV contract, with ESPN2; and a purse that jumps by
$100,000 to $700,000, with $105,000 of that long green earmarked
for the winner. That's 3 1/2 times what Kathy Whitworth earned
here in 1984, when she claimed her 85th tour victory to pass Sam
Snead on the alltime list.

SEWICKLEY HEIGHTS, A.K.A. TITANIUM TOWN

The Pittsburgh Senior Classic still isn't in Pittsburgh, but
it's getting closer. After a five-year run at Quicksilver Golf
Club in Midway, Pa., the Classic has moved to a more traditional
layout, venerable Sewickley Heights Golf Club, 15 miles
northwest of Steeltown. The event was homeless as recently as
February but now boasts a purse of $1.1 million and a field that
features Gil Morgan--who may be rusty after four weeks off--plus
Larry Nelson and Lee Trevino. It should be a perfect setup for
Jay (Mr. 27) Sigel, who broke the nine-hole Senior tour scoring
record last week at the Bell Atlantic and will be playing in his
home state for the second week in a row.
