GENTLEMEN, HEFT YOUR DRIVERS

In his 17 years as a pro, Vijay Singh has won two Buick
Classics, a Buick Open, two Volvos--the Open di Firenze and the
German Open--and a Toyota World Match Play Championship. That's
why he can afford to drive a Range Rover. After winning the 1997
Buick Open (above), Singh narrowly missed at the Honda Classic
this year, but he has earned $743,853 in '98 and merits the pole
position at the Buick Open. With many big wheels bypassing
Warwick Hills to tune up for next week's PGA, Singh has a
souped-up import from the Japanese tour to contend with: Brian
Watts, playing on a sponsor's exemption after his British Open
heroics. Late entry Tiger Woods is no jalopy either.

BONUS COMPOUNDS INTEREST IN STAR BANK

Star Bank officials felt shortchanged last week when the
supremely bankable Se Ri Pak made an untimely withdrawal. Still,
their tournament has something in reserve--a $100,000 bonus for
the winner. The fine print: She must have won at least once
before in '98. That puts Donna Andrews, Brandie Burton, Dale
Eggeling, Tammie Green, Pat Hurst, Rosie Jones and Lisa Walters
in line for the dividend, but leaves Colleen Walker locked out.
The defending champ is winless this year after banking the bonus
last summer.

FISH STORY IN THE LAND OF LAKES

Burnet Classic week opens with a popular bass-fishing tournament
on Lake Minnetonka. Tom Wargo, the Senior tour's top fisherman,
will be favored to land the biggest bass, but once the golf
starts he may have trouble keeping up with former Burnet champs
Hale Irwin ('97), Vicente Fernandez ('96) and Dave Stockton
('94), who finished 1-2-6 at the Senior Open. Gil Morgan and Lee
Trevino, who have been skunked in this event, will also try to
hook the $225,000 first prize, bringing more marquee appeal to
one of the best-attended events on the Senior circuit.
