DON'T MISS

Saturday 11/14

Nebraska at Kansas State
ABC & PPV, 3:30 PM

Masquerading as a man with a reason/My charade is the event of
the season. So sang the rock group Kansas, and we may find out
today if the lyrics apply to Kansas State. Do the 9-0 Wildcats
belong in the Fiesta Bowl, or does their record, achieved against
mostly weak opponents, put the b.s. in the BCS, in whose rankings
K-State is No. 3? Kansas State enters today's game boasting a
17-game winning streak; quarterback Michael Bishop (right), who's
17-1 as a starter for the Wildcats; and the nation's top-ranked
scoring defense (7.7 points per game). Huskers backs DeAngelo
Evans and Joel Mackovicka will either salvage the season for the
8-2 Big Red or, thanks to Wildcat linebacker Travis Ochs and
mates, be rendered dust in the wind.

HIGHLIGHTS

Sunday 11/15

Tennessee at Purdue
ESPN 4:30 PM

The fight song is Rocky Top, the coach is named Summitt, and yet
the Lady Volunteers show every sign of ascending even higher. All
five starters--including two-time women's college basketball
player of the year Chamique Holdsclaw--return for Tennessee,
winners of three straight national titles and 45 consecutive
games. The defending Big Ten champion Boilermakers also retain
all their starters from last season, most notably the backcourt
tandem of Ukari Figgs and Stephanie White-McCarty.

Monday 11/16

Broncos at Chiefs
ABC 8:20 PM

In Kansas City this season, football has been a game of inches--of
precipitation. Three of the Chiefs' five games at Arrowhead
Stadium have been played in downpours. (Where are K.C. and the
Sunshine Band when you need 'em?) On Oct. 4 the Chiefs' game with
the Seahawks was even stopped in the second quarter because of
rain and lightning. Four weeks later Kansas City lost to the Jets
in a robust rain and then discovered that their locker room
showers were out of order, the dreaded drench 'n' stench combo.
Actually, the really foul odor from the Chiefs (4-5) is their
offense, which is ranked 22nd in the NFL. Denver (9-0), which has
the AFC's top offense and an election-day yea on a new stadium,
has only one cloud: The Broncos have lost their last three
regular-season games at Arrowhead. Where's my umbrella?

Tuesday 11/17

Texas at Houston
ESPN2 10 PM

Hey, Dyan Cannon, Samuel L. Jackson, Spike Lee et al.: Still need
a fix for your NBA jones? Check out the Glide, a.k.a. Clyde
Drexler, as he makes his coaching debut at his alma mater, the
University of Houston. The rush chairman of Phi Slamma Jamma goes
from a career in which he played against immortals George Gervin
and Moses Malone to a job coaching their sons, guards Gee Gervin
and Moses Malone Jr. Conference USA basketball--it's Fan-tastic!

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
HBO 10:15 PM

Which of these athletes covered in this installment is traveling
the more arduous path: an ultramarathoner who runs 100 miles at a
10,000-foot altitude in the Leadville (Colo.) 100, or golfer John
Daly, who is trying to walk the straight and narrow while dealing
with addictions to alcohol and gambling? Daly tells Gumbel, "My
most miserable time in life now is on the golf course. My body is
just not used to playing golf sober.... Tomorrow's very scary. I
can't sit here and say I'm never gonna drink again...'cause I
don't know."

THE RATING

2.8

Overnight rating for NBC's Breeders' Cup telecast last Saturday,
reversing a two-year slide. The Classic (the final half hour)
rated a 3.9.

THE ZAPPER

With the start of the NBA season delayed by the lockout, the only
pro basketball you can see on TV is the ABL--if you look hard. Fox
Sports Net is scheduled to carry 11 ABL games (the next: Nov. 26,
Columbus at Philadelphia). Several Fox Sports Net stations have
local rights to NBA games. There's talk some might fill in with
ABL games; that would be a boon for fans and the exposure-starved
women's league.
