The Week June 8-14

June 20, 1999

Multiple Choice

Karrie Webb won't break Mickey Wright's record of 13 victories
in a season, but five wins by June 13 isn't bad. Bruce Fleisher,
who won for the fourth time in '99, has a shot at the Senior
standard (nine). Who's more dominant? The numbers say Webb.
She's 130 under par this year; Fleisher 76. Webb's 68.79 scoring
average would dust the LPGA record (69.99). Fleisher's 69.59
leads his tour, but Hale Irwin's record of 68.59 is safe.

PGA Ted Tryba's victory in the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis
was the first Monday finish on Tour since the 1997 Memorial....
David Duval suffered second-degree burns on his right thumb and
forefinger while picking up a teapot at his home in Ponte Vedra
Beach, Fla., but planned to play in the U.S. Open.... Tiger
Woods is organizing a 12-player made-for-TV tournament at Rio
Secco Golf Club near Las Vegas at the end of the year.... Sergio
Garcia has accepted an invitation to the Aug. 12-15 PGA....
Masters champ Jose Maria Olazabal, who closed with a 62 in
Memphis, could be the first player since Jack Nicklaus in '72 to
win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year.

LPGA Webb, who birdied the last three holes to win the Wegmans
Rochester (N.Y.) International by a stroke over Cindy McCurdy,
has made 33 straight cuts. (Webb has only missed two in 86
starts as a pro.) She placed in the top 10 for a record 16th
straight time.

SENIOR Fleisher, winner of the BellSouth Senior Classic in
Nashville by a shot over Al Geiberger, had not had a top 10
finish since April.... Mike McCullough, who came in 26th, made
his 90th straight start. Bruce Summerhays holds the Senior
record of 96.

ALSO Matt Gogel, who eagled the second hole of a playoff with
Casey Martin to win the Nike Cleveland Open, is one victory shy
of a battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour. Gogel won the
Louisiana Open in March.... Jarmo Sandelin's second victory in
'99, at the European tour's German Open, in Berlin, moved him to
third on the Ryder Cup points list.
