Cross-country Carius, 61, the men's cross-country and track coach at North Central College was named Division III Coach of the Century in his sport. In 1999 Carius's Cardinals won the division's national title for the third straight year and for the 12th time in his 34 years at the school.

Football Nate, a senior running back at Burlington High, exploded for 3,232 yards and a state-record 43 touchdowns in 11 games as the Seahorses won the state Division II title. He took over 15th place, from Herschel Walker, on the single-season high school rushing list.
