Only one women's circuit--the Pro Rodeo Association (1948)--is
PGA In his first 71 Tour starts Woods has 16 victories,
including two majors. Jack Nicklaus won 11 times with three
majors in his first 71 tournaments.... Woods ran his playoff
record to 4-1, the loss having come against Billy Mayfair in the
1998 Nissan Open.
LPGA Karrie Webb was named the 1999 Player of the Year at
Monday's 50th-anniversary gala at the Breakers Hotel in Palm
Beach. As the defending champ at this week's Office Depot in
West Palm, she has played in 11 tournaments in Florida and
finished with four victories, four seconds, a third, a seventh
and a 34th.
SENIOR Three players have won the season-opening MasterCard
Championship (Jan. 21-23 at the Hualalai Resort in Kona, Hawaii)
and gone on to top the money list: Hale Irwin in 1997, Jim
Colbert in '95 and Peter Thomson in '85.... Tom Kite will make
his Senior debut at the Feb. 4-6 Royal Caribbean Classic, in Key
Biscayne, Fla. Lanny Wadkins will probably make his first start
a week later at the Ace Group Classic, in Naples, Fla.
ALSO Last season one player received the three major awards
(player of the year, money title and scoring average) on each of
the three U.S. tours. They were Woods, Webb and Bruce Fleisher,
on the Senior tour....
Gary Adams, who popularized metal woods and founded three club
companies--Taylor Made, Founders Club and McHenry Metals--died
of cancer on Jan. 2. He was 56....
With his victory in the Victorian Open, Brad Lamb, a 22-year-old
who grew up playing on sand greens in Tarrawingee, a tiny
ranching community 145 miles northeast of Melbourne, became the
third amateur to win this season on the Australasian tour....
Beth Bauer, a sophomore at Duke, won the Harder Hall
Invitational, a prestigious amateur event in Sebring, Fla., by
16 shots. It was Bauer's second consecutive victory in the event.
