Michael Campbell, who made the Heineken Classic in Perth a
second straight Australasian/European tour win, goes for number
3 this week in Sydney.
--PGA When his regular caddie, Andy Martinez, took the week off,
Lehman called on longtime pal Dudley Logan. Says Logan, "Tom
said, 'I'm going to win the Phoenix Open. Want to come down and
caddie for me?'"
...Although he hadn't won an official event since the 1996 Tour
Championship, Lehman says his drought was a media creation. He
counts victories in last month's Williams World Challenge and
the '97 Loch Lomond World Invitational as bona fide wins....
The puka shells? Lehman's wife, Melissa, bought 'em in Hawaii
Davis Love III ($12,548,297) has passed Greg Norman as the
Tour's alltime money winner, but No. 3 Tiger Woods is only
Frank Lickliter, who held a one-stroke lead going into the final
round but wound up tied for 10th, is scheduled to appear in
Warren County (Ohio) Court on Thursday for a hearing on a
lawsuit brought by former agent Mike Curtis, who claims
Lickliter owes him $8,150 in unpaid commissions.
--SENIOR Player, skunked through 18 holes of the Skins Game,
birdied the first hole of a playoff to win four skins and
$220,000. That topped Tom Watson (seven skins for $210,000),
Jack Nicklaus (four, $90,000) and Arnold Palmer (three, $80,000).
--ALSO Judy Bell, the first woman president of the USGA, will
become the first woman to captain one of the association's men's
teams when she leads the U.S. in the Aug. 31-Sept. 3 World
Amateur Team Championship....
Campbell, who finished a tournament-record 20 under par at the
Vines Resort, beat runner-up Thomas Bjorn by six shots.
