The Week Feb. 29-March 6

--Red Zone
Sure, everybody loves Raymond after Jim Furyk did a number on
the Blue Monster.

This is an article from the March 13, 2000 issue Original Layout

--Karrie On
Karrie Webb rolled to a third tour win in a row--when Annika
Sorenstam rolled over.

--Rain Men
The Toshiba's called after 36. These guys are good (and they're
made out of sugar).

--Desert Classic
Jose Coceres double-bogeyed the final hole in Dubai but still
won by two.

PGA What made Furyk think he could birdie five of the last
seven holes, shoot a 30 on the final nine and come from six
shots back to catch runner-up Franklin Langham? Something he saw
earlier this season when he was paired with Tiger Woods during
the final round at Pebble Beach. "Standing on the 15th tee,"
said Furyk, "if you had told me Tiger was going to win [he made
up seven shots on Matt Gogel], I would have laughed at
you."...The field's average at the new Blue Monster was 71.15,
or .68 of a stroke lower than last year's.... Furyk, who matched
Greg Norman's tournament record of 23 under, has gone that low
or lower in four of his five Tour wins.... In ruling in favor of
Casey Martin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
rejected the Tour's argument that walking is an essential part
of golf.... Add Norman and Nick Price to the growing list of
players who say they'll skip next January's World Match Play in
Australia.

LPGA After taking a week off, Webb will play in the March 16-19
Standard Register Ping in Phoenix.

SENIOR Allen Doyle, the Toshiba winner, birdied 13 of the 36
holes, including three of his last four, to beat Jim Thorpe and
Howard Twitty by a shot.... Only .86 of an inch of rain fell in
Newport Beach, Calif., between 4 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday.

ALSO Coceres, 36, grew up in a one-room house with a sister and
nine brothers--four of whom are golf pros--in the Chaco province
of northern Argentina.... Sergio Garcia has pulled out of the
April 13-16 MCI Classic to play in the inaugural Seve
Ballesteros Trophy in Sunningdale, England.
