After Greensboro, Hal Sutton is the only man alive with a shot
at the Dead Zone triple crown.
If Vegas is for losers, why did Larry Nelson, a three-time
runner-up in 2000, win there?
Jamie Spence closed with a 64 to win the European tour's
Moroccan Open by four shots.
PGA Sutton, who drilled Tiger Woods in the final round of the
Players Championship and whipped Andrew Magee by three shots on
Sunday in the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, is being
hailed as a great closer, but he has won only six of the 15
tournaments in which he has led or been tied for the lead
entering the final round....
Billy Andrade celebrated what he called his "one-year
anniversary of crappiness." Beginning with last year's
tournament in Greensboro, Andrade had missed the cut in 18 of 29
starts. He finished 62nd last week.... Phil Tataurangi made an
11 on the par-5 2nd hole at Forest Oaks last Thursday (he hit
three shots out of bounds), shot a 20-over 92 and WD'd....
Greensboro used to be called the Pop-top Open. Justin Leonard
must now think of it as the Flip-top Open. Upset by cell phones
ringing on the course, Leonard went outside the ropes during
Thursday's round, grabbed the ticket of a phoning fan and read
him the rules on the back prohibiting, among other things, the
use of cell phones.
SENIOR Nelson, who beat Bruce Fleisher and Hale Irwin by five
shots at the Las Vegas Senior Classic, hit 48 of 54 greens in
regulation (best in the field) and 39 of 42 fairways (second).
He was the 10th winner in the 11 tournaments this year.
ALSO A 36-year-old from England, Spence has one other victory,
the 1992 European Masters.... Australian amateur and UNLV
dropout Adam Scott, described because of his swing as the "white
Tiger Woods" by Ignacio Garrido, tied for sixth, seven shots
behind Spence.... The Royal Canadian Golf Association has broken
ranks with its parent organization, the Royal and Ancient Golf
Club of St. Andrews, and joined the USGA in banning the new
Callaway ERC driver.
