The Week June 20-26

Cardinal Rules
The Cablinasian wins the Open. The Native American wins in
Memphis. We like the guy in the cart at Hartford.

Roll Model
Wendy Ward knows the 34 Rules of Golf backward and forward. It's
Rule 35 that got away from her.

No Surrender
Lee Trevino always says he's going to cut back, but never has.
Now that he has won again, they'll have to drag him away.

--PGA Notah Begay's win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and Tiger
Woods's W the week before at Pebble Beach were the first
back-to-back victories by minorities since Victor Regalado and
Trevino won the Pleasant Valley Classic and the PGA,
respectively, in 1975.... Only Woods has more wins (nine) than
Begay (three) in the last 10 months.... Other than Houston,
Memphis had the weakest field of the year with only one of the
top 10 money winners, Stewart Cink, present, and he finished 33rd.

--LPGA Juli Inkster, who beat Stefania Croce of Italy on the
second playoff hole at the McDonald's LPGA Championship in
Wilmington, Del., has won six majors overall, and three of the
last five.... Pat Bradley, Betsy King and Patty Sheehan are the
only active players with as many majors as Inkster.... Though
Ward said she did not see her ball, a Callaway Rule 35 model,
move on the 13th green, she gave herself a one-stroke penalty,
which kept her out of the playoff.

--SENIOR Trevino's victory at the Cadillac NFL Classic in
Clifton, N.J., where he topped Walter Hall by two shots, was his
first in 27 months.

--ALSO After an eight-month police investigation, two starters
at the busiest course in the country, Honolulu's Ala Wai, have
been arrested for regularly taking five- to six-dollar bribes
for tee times.... Tim Thelen, an assistant pro at Baywood
Country Club in Pasadena, Texas, who played with Colin
Montgomerie at Houston Baptist, won the PGA Club Pro
Championship.... Lee Westwood, winner of the European Grand Prix
in Hexham, England, has two victories, a second, a fourth and a
fifth in his last five starts.... Led by Stanford senior Hilary
Homeyer's 3-0-1 record, the U.S. defeated Great Britain and
Ireland 10-8 in the Curtis Cup at Ganton Golf Club in
England.... Naree Wongluekiet, 14, won the Lucent Technologies
Junior, the second AJGA major of the season, edging her twin
sister and the defending champ, Aree, by a shot.
