The Week Oct. 17-23

Ryder Lite
The Presidents Cup has half the excitement, half the attention
and half the competition.

This is an article from the Oct. 30, 2000 issue Original Layout

Gator Aid
John Huston has won six times on Tour, and his victory in Tampa
is his fifth in Florida.

Green Giant
Karrie Webb, the first rookie to earn $1 million, becomes the
first woman to hit $2M in a year.

Little Leeway
Hale Irwin would've broken Trevino's record long ago if the
Seniors played in Hawaii every week.

Pad and Pencil
Padraig Harrington, denied a win in May for not attesting his
card, signs off on a W in Spain.

--PGA The U.S.'s 11-point margin of victory at Robert Trent
Jones Golf Club in suburban Washington, D.C., was the largest in
the history of men's and women's pro team events.... Huston, who
lives in Palm Harbor and has played the city's Westin Innisbrook
Resort course more than 100 times, closed with a 65 to win the
inaugural Tampa Bay Classic by three shots over Carl Paulson....
David Gossett, the '99 U.S. Amateur champ, advanced to the
second stage of Q school. Hank Kuehne, who won the Amateur in
'98, did not.

--LPGA Webb's win at the AFLAC Champions in Mobile, which came
on the first hole of a playoff against Dottie Pepper, gave her
seven victories this season, the most since Beth Daniel won
seven times in '90. Mickey Wright holds the record with 13 wins
in '63.... Pepper told The Palm Beach Post that the European
Solheim Cuppers "would be bagging groceries" if it weren't for
the LPGA.... Sue Ginter shot a nine-under 279 to win the final
stage of the LPGA's Q school.

--SENIOR Irwin, whose four-shot win over Joe Inman in the EMC2
Kaanapali Classic was his 29th and tied him with Trevino for
most in Senior history, has triumphed five times in his career
in Hawaii.

--ALSO Harrington's two-shot victory over Gary Orr in the
Turespana Masters at Club de Campo in Madrid makes up for a
boo-boo earlier this year at the Benson & Hedges International
Open. After apparently winning that event, Harrington was DQ'd
when it was discovered that he had not signed his first-round
scorecard.

COLOR PHOTO: PHOTOGRAPH BY ROBERT BECK Tiger's troopers Woods thrilled his pint-sized patrons at the Presidents Cup by putting together his first winning record in a team event.
