The Week Jan. 9-15

No Trouble in Paradise
Jim Furyk should play a limited schedule. Limited, that is, to
tournaments held in Hawaii and Las Vegas.

Spring-like Effect
Garrett Willis jump-starts his rookie year at the Tucson Open
with a victory in his first official event as a Tour member.

The Pak Is Back
The secret to Se Ri Pak's success? She credits a new lifestyle,
a new coach, a new caddie and an old work ethic.

PGA Furyk, who sank a 10-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole of
the Mercedes Championships at Kapalua, Hawaii, to beat Rory
Sabbatini by a stroke, has won six times on Tour. Five of the
victories have been in either Hawaii or Vegas.... Willis's
three-under 69 on Monday--last Friday's round became the first
snow-out on Tour in 14 years--gave him a one-shot win over Kevin
Sutherland.... During a practice round for Tucson at the Gallery
Golf Club, one of two courses used in the tournament, John Daly
reached the 690-yard 9th--the longest hole on Tour--in two. He hit
a 410-yard drive and a 280-yard one-iron.... Per-Ulrik Johansson,
34, popped the question to Jill Parnevik, Jesper's 26-year-old
sister, on Dec. 30. Although she said yes, a wedding date has not
been set.

LPGA Pak made seven birdies on the final 11 holes to shoot an
eight-under 64 and finish four shots ahead of Penny Hammel and
Carin Koch in the YourLife Vitamins LPGA Classic at Grand
Cypress Resort in Orlando. It was Pak's first victory in 24
starts.... Since Pak joined the tour in 1998, 10 South Koreans
have followed, including '01 rookies Nan Kyong Ha, Hee-Won Han
and Soo Yun Kang.... Kim Williams, who in '94 was struck in the
neck by a stray bullet in Warren, Ohio, was injured last Friday
just outside the gates to Grand Cypress when the vehicle she was
driving was hit head-on by a car whose driver was having a
diabetic seizure. Williams broke her left collarbone, underwent
surgery on her right knee and is not expected back on tour for
at least four months.

SENIOR The over-50 circuit will return to Oklahoma for the first
time in 11 years when Oklahoma City's Gaillardia Golf and
Country Club hosts the Senior Tour Championship on Oct. 25-28.

ALSO Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe won his fifth South African
Masters, beating Retief Goosen and Des Terblanche by a shot at
the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in Port Edwards.... The Royal
and Ancient has overturned a rule banning British universities
from offering full golf scholarships.
