Sevens from Heaven
The secret to success at Pebble Beach? That's easy--fall behind
by seven shots during the final round.

Call Him Scary Larry
If he keeps winning at this rate, Larry Nelson's 2001 season
will make Tiger Woods's 2000 look like chopped liver.

This explains that Presidents Cup blowout: Michael Campbell's
the only golfer from Down Under ranked among the top 30.

PGA Davis Love III snapped a 34-month drought with his
one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh at the AT&T Pebble Beach
National Pro-Am. Love, who tied the course record by going out
in eight-under 28 during his closing 63, made up seven shots on
the overnight leader, Phil Mickelson--the same margin Tiger
Woods overcame last year.... John Daly's third round at the AT&T
was the most lopsided of the season, a 46-33-79. Daly started
quad (9), double (5), triple (8) but birdied four of the last
six holes.... The USGA's decision to exempt the top 50 in the
World Ranking, instead of the top 20, into the U.S. Open
shouldn't dramatically reduce the number of spots for
qualifiers. Last year only five of the top 50 weren't otherwise
exempt.

SENIOR Nelson, who won the Royal Caribbean Classic in Key
Biscayne, Fla., a Stableford event, by a point over Isao Aoki,
is 2 for 2 this season and has six wins in 10 starts dating back
to August.... Aoki lost two points on the 1st hole of the final
round when he fanned on a tap-in for bogey.... Bruce Fleisher
finished 11th, failing to win the tournament for the first time
since he joined the tour in '99.... Jack Nicklaus plans to make
next week's Verizon Classic outside Tampa his first official
start of the year.

LPGA The USGA has offered no special exemptions to its
championships this year, so if Nancy Lopez, 44, wants to play in
the May 31-June 3 U.S. Open, she'll have to go through
qualifying for the first time.

ALSO Campbell, a New Zealander who's ranked 15th in the world,
successfully defended his title at the Heineken Classic in
Perth, Australia, beating countryman David Smail by five
shots.... In the first round at Perth, Brett Ogle smashed a tee
marker with his driver, causing a flying shard of plastic to cut
a female spectator below the eye.
