HIGHLIGHTS

SATURDAY 2/10

Blues at Avalanche
ESPN2 8 PM Almost half of the dozen starters in Sunday's NHL
All-Star Game at Denver's Pepsi Center played before their
hometown crowd. Colorado, with the league's best record at the
All-Star break (79 points), was represented by defenseman Ray
Bourque, goalie Patrick Roy and forwards Peter Forsberg, Milan
Hejduk and Joe Sakic (the NHL's leading scorer, with 72 points).
Tonight the Avalanche faces off against the team with the
next-best record (75 points), Central Division-leading St. Louis.
In their lone previous meeting this season, in November, the two
Western Conference powers skated to a 3-3 tie.

MONDAY 2/12

ESPY Awards
ESPN 9 PM The ESPY, an acronym for Egregious Self-Promotional
Yammering, was created nine years ago so that athletes from
different sports might gather for one evening to bathe their
fragile egos in a reflecting pool of adulation--and perhaps get
jiggy with the on-air talent afterward. Speaking of fragile,
Unbreakable's Mr. Glass, Samuel L. Jackson, hosts from Las Vegas.

MONDAY 2/12-TUESDAY 2/13

Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
USA 8 PM Pooch parade? Waggin' train? How else to describe a
three-week span in which, beginning tonight, sport goes to the
dogs? The Westminster features more than 2,500 canines of 159
breeds (including last year's Sporting Group winner, English
springer spaniel Samantha, above). Then, starting March 3, the
1,150-mile Iditarod sled dog race (USA will telecast a two-hour
special on April 10) commences in Alaska. In other words, from
Best in Show to best in snow. At Madison Square Garden,
commentators David Frei and Joe Garagiola--who we hope will opine
on Fred Willard's character Buck Laughlin (loosely based on Joe
G.) from the film Best in Show--are your dog guides. Raise the
woof!

ALL TIMES EASTERN. SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

THE ZAPPER

It may not be the best sports film, but it certainly has one of
the most memorable titles: Stockard Channing, Julius Erving and
Jonathan Winters star in the 1979 cheesefest The Fish That Saved
Pittsburgh (ESPN Classic, Sunday 9 p.m.).... Last Thursday's
basketball matchup on ESPN between Connecticut and Tennessee--a
92-88 Lady Vols victory--received the third-highest regular-season
women's rating (0.94, or 763,325 homes) ever on ESPN. The other
two highest-rated games in that category also involved the
Huskies and the Lady Vols.
