SUNDAY 2/25

Southwest Missouri State at Wichita State
FOX SPORTS NET MIDWEST 3 PM (DIRECTV CH. 647; DISH NETWORK CH.
418) Jackie Oh-my! Southwest Missouri's Jackie Stiles takes aim
at the NCAA women's career scoring record today--and her aim is
pretty good. Stiles, a 5'8" senior guard from the stoplightless
town of Claflin, Kans. (pop. 678), enters the game against the
Shockers leading the nation in scoring with a 31.1-point
average, putting her 44 points shy of the 3,122 attained from
1985-'86 to 1988-'89 by Mississippi Valley State's Patricia
Hoskins.

MONDAY 2/26

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
HBO 9:30 PM In 1999, 22 big league umpires lost their jobs after
resigning en masse. As a tactical ploy it ranked right up there
with the one that comedian Steve Martin says he employed during
his high school football days: "I used to like to punt on first
down." Correspondent Bernard Goldberg's evenhanded report focuses
mainly on one of the resignees, Eric Gregg, who's broke and
hoping against hope to get his job back. "Without baseball, he's
lost," Gregg's wife, Ramona, tells Goldberg.

TUESDAY 2/27

Sonics at Knicks
TBS 8 PM St. Patrick's Day arrives 18 days early this year in the
Big Apple. For 15 seasons 7-foot center Patrick Ewing was part of
the Manhattan skyline. Then, in a dizzying flurry of dealmaking
last summer, he became the whirled trade center, landing in
Seattle as part of a four-team swap. Tonight Ewing returns to
Madison Square Garden for the first time since the deal.

Don't Miss

WEDNESDAY 2/28

Mexico at United States
ESPN2 7:30 PM Last Friday, Mexico's president, Vicente Fox,
welcomed George W. Bush to his estate to discuss migration,
trade and whether to pardon Matt Damon for All the Pretty
Horses. Tonight, for the first match in the final World Cup
soccer qualifying round, in Columbus, Ohio, the U.S. welcomes
Mexico. Talk about a home-field advantage: The average
temperature in Columbus on this date is 30[degrees], about
58[degrees] colder than in, say, Acapulco. The Americans, led by
defender Jeff Agoos and midfielder Cobi Jones (13, above), play
10 games in the next eight months, hoping to become one of three
teams in the six-nation region to advance to the 2002 finals in
Japan and South Korea.

ALL TIMES EASTERN. SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

THE ZAPPER

Before Fox's rookie NASCAR commentator Darrell Waltrip works
another race, he should review tapes of the 1998 Rose Bowl. Last
Sunday, as Waltrip's brother Michael took the checkered flag in
the Daytona 500, Darrell was openly rooting, yelling, "You got
it! You got it!" By contrast, when Brian Griese led Michigan to
victory in Pasadena, his dad, ABC analyst Bob, betrayed no
favoritism. The rule stands: No cheering in the press box....
Dick Schaap's adaptation of his autobiography, Flashing Before My
Eyes, is an ESPN Classic special (Tuesday, 9 p.m.).
