Ryding High
Scott Verplank wins the Canadian Open--and makes Curtis Strange
look like a genius.

Park Place
Used to be that the Swedes owned the LPGA tour. Now the Koreans
have taken over.

Double Up
What were the odds on Jim Thorpe's becoming the second Senior of
'01 to win two straight?

Loopy
Last year a former caddie from Argentina won the European
Masters. This year another one does.

PGA Verplank, who shot a 14-under 266 at Royal Montreal Golf
Club to beat Bob Estes and Joey Sindelar by three shots, is the
first wild-card pick to win a Tour event in the time between his
selection and the Ryder Cup....

LPGA Gloria Park made up five strokes on overnight leader Donna
Andrews with a six-under 64 on Sunday to defeat Andrews by a
shot at the Williams Championship at Tulsa Country Club....
Park, the first nonexempt player to win on tour since Laurel
Kean's victory in last year's State Farm Classic, is the third
South Korean to win this season.... The 12 Koreans on tour have
amassed 19 titles since '98.

SENIOR Thorpe shot a 14-under par 199 to take the Allianz
Championship at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa,
by two strokes over Gil Morgan.

ALSO First-time Euro tour winner Ricardo Gonzalez, 31, led wire
to wire in Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland. Eduardo Romero took
the championship last year.... Dermot Byrnes, the caddie for
Stephen Gallacher and the brother of Myles (15 Clubs) Byrnes,
failed to show for Gallacher's tee time on Sunday.... Shingo
Katayama, the crowd fave at last month's PGA, won the Suntory
Open in Inzai to become the Japanese tour's first three-time
winner this season.... On Aug. 28, Rich Jones pleaded guilty in
Tulsa County District Court to vandalizing 12 greens at Southern
Hills Country Club in June 1999 (SI, June 11) and was sentenced
to five years deferred.... Minnesota men's coach John Means
resigned after a university audit showed that he had billed the
school for plane tickets used by his wife and daughter.
