--PGA The Tour is on the verge of launching a circuit for players
ages 40 through 49. The mid-tour is expected to have six to
eight $1 million tournaments held on Mondays and Tuesdays near
regular Tour stops. The first event could be played as soon as
December.... In addition to his perfect record in overtime in
the U.S., Allenby, who beat Rocco Mediate and Larry Mize by
three strokes in the Marconi Pennsylvania Classic at Laurel
Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa., is 4-0 in playoffs on other
--LPGA Fischer shot a 10-under 206 to win the Asahi Ryokuken
International Championship at Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club
in North Augusta, S.C., by a shot over Tracy Hanson and Emilee
Klein.... An LPGA-record 29 players withdrew from the
tournament.... The takeoff of the charter flight that carried
129 players, caddies and family members from Portland to the
event on Sept. 15 was delayed for an hour when the fearful
passengers demanded background checks on the flight crew.
--SENIOR Lietzke's three-shot victory over Allen Doyle and Gary
McCord in the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club in
Cary, N.C., was his second in seven starts since turning 50 on
July 18.... Larry Nelson, who tied for sixth, made a 10 on the
401-yard 13th hole in the second round. He had four penalty
strokes on the hole--two for playing the wrong ball, one after
hitting into a water hazard and another for failing to notify
his playing partner that he had hit a provisional ball.
--ALSO Garcia's W at Saint-Nom-La-Breteche Golf Club outside Paris
was his first on the European tour since the 1999 German
Masters. He finished a stroke ahead of Retief Goosen, who
bogeyed the 71st and 72nd holes.... CBS golf analyst Ken Venturi
was arrested on Sept. 20 and charged with drunken driving after
nearly hitting a patrol car near his home on Marco Island, Fla.
