Mark Calcavecchia may have tied a Tour record with only 93 putts
at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, but Rocco Mediate
beat him by hitting 12 more greens in regulation.... In a span
of 25 hours at the Countrywide Tradition, Jim Thorpe played the
par-5 18th hole in four under, making eagle on Saturday, then
birdies to close the final round and to beat John Jacobs in a
playoff.... Sergio Garcia earned his first pro victory on
Spanish soil with a four-stroke triumph at the Canarias Open de
Espana. Seve Ballesteros (1981, '85 and '95) is the only other
Spaniard to win his national championship since 1973.... More
fun for the home folks: 17-year-old amateur Rafael Cabrera
played in the final group with Garcia and tied for fourth,
equaling the best showing by an amateur in a European tour event.
