Richard Smith, RESTON, VA.
Track and Field
Richard, a senior at South Lakes High, won the 1,000 meters at
the Virginia Tech Invitational meet in 2:28.18, the fastest boy's
time in the nation this year. He also won the 800 at the Nike
Indoor Classic in Maryland and the 500 at the Virginia AAA
Northern Region meet.

Kerm Helmer, BUFFALO
Bowling
Helmer, 58, the coach at Erie Community College, guided both the
men's and the women's teams to the National Junior College
Athletic Association bowling championship crowns. In 26 years,
Helmer's men's teams have won 15 national titles and his women's
teams 22 titles.

Heather Kile, MARLTON, N.J.
Basketball
Kile, a senior forward at Swarthmore College, was named Division
III women's player of the year after a season in which she became
the school's alltime leading scorer (1,965 points) and rebounder
(1,263). She is also the Centennial Conference career scoring
leader.

Derek Sanders, HAMPTON, ARK.
Baseball
Derek, a sophomore at Hampton High School, hit four home runs in
a doubleheader and racked up 14 RBIs. In the opening 16-1 win
over Hermitage he played centerfield and hit a grand slam and a
two-run homer. He then pitched a 22-12 win over Fordyce, hitting
another grand slam and a three-run homer.

Jean Troy, SUN CITY CENTER, FLA.
Swimming
Troy, 74, a former YMCA aquatics director, won five gold medals
and set four age-group world records at the FINA World Masters
Championships. She established world marks in the 50-, 100- and
200-meter freestyle and the 50-meter butterfly and won the gold
medal in the 100 butterfly.

Hetag Pliev, CINCINNATI
Wrestling
Hetag, a senior wrestler at Lakota East High, broke a 1-1 tie and
defeated Kurt Backes from Blair Academy in New Jersey 5-3 to win
the 189-pound class in the National High School Seniors Wrestling
Championships in Cleveland. The victory helped Ohio capture the
state title.
