In The Crease

In the wake of the bickering over the supplemental discipline
handed down in the postseason by NHL director of operations Colin
Campbell, one of the suggestions being floated by league
executives is to hire an independent judge or arbitrator to
determine suspensions throughout the year. Team officials and
players would not be allowed to petition the arbitrator before a
hearing.... Don't be surprised to see the Capitals hire Glen
Hanlon or Bryan Trottier to replace coach Ron Wilson, who was
fired last Friday. A former NHL goaltender, Hanlon is coach of
the club's AHL affiliate in Portland, Maine. Hall of Fame forward
Trottier, an assistant coach with the Avalanche, was a teammate
of Jaromir Jagr's on the Penguins in the early 1990s. Trottier
and Jagr, who had a disappointing first season with the Capitals
in 2001-02, roomed together on the road.... Not many hockey
observers took note in 1997 when the Mighty Ducks acquired
journeyman center Mark Janssens from the Hurricanes for prospect
Bates Battaglia and a fourth-round draft choice. Now Janssens is
retired and Battaglia, 26, has emerged as a forceful power
forward. The fourth-rounder? Carolina used that pick to select
Josef Vasicek, who centers the Hurricanes' No. 2 line.
