In The Crease

June 29, 2003

Don't be surprised to see Bruins goalie Jeff Hackett, who becomes
an unrestricted free agent on July 1, sign with the Flyers. Last
month Philadelphia traded its No. 1 netminder, Roman Cechmanek,
who failed miserably in the playoffs for the second straight
spring, to the Kings.... Expect the Penguins, who hired rookie
head coach Eddie Olczyk on June 10, to bring in an experienced
assistant. Lorne Molleken, who was head coach of the Blackhawks
from 1998-99 through '99-00, will likely get the job....
Concerned with the continuing drop in scoring, the NHL is looking
into ways to more closely regulate and monitor the size of
goaltenders' equipment. Kris King, a former tough-guy forward who
played 14 years in the NHL, will be in charge of oversight,
replacing Dave Dryden.... Another astute move by Devils general
manager Lou Lamoriello: With University of North Dakota center
Zach Parise inexplicably sliding in last weekend's draft, New
Jersey traded up to get him with the 17th pick. Expect Parise,
whose father, J.P., played 14 NHL seasons, to blossom into a
star.
